Edwards recorded in “Image” no. 27 that the tempests of the ocean and the dangerous white waters of rivers are shadows of the omnipotent God’s wrath and judgment.[*]1. “The waves and billows of the sea in a storm and the dire cataracts there are of rivers have a representation of the terrible wrath of God, and amazing misery of [them] that endure it.” WJE 11:58.The Psalmist wrote, “Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me” and “Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves” (Psalm 42:7; 88:7 ESV). The sea is emblematic of the power of God the Creator.
